Super Eagles’ World Cup hope fades as South Africa hold Nigeria to 1-1 draw

On Tuesday in Bloemfontein, South Africa drew with Nigeria 1-1, putting the Super Eagles at risk of not qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
The Bafana Bafana took an early lead when a mistake from William Troost-Ekong resulted in an own goal mid-way through the first half, but Calvin Bassey equalized with a header just before the break.
Nigeria knew that a win was vital for their chances to qualify as they arrived in Bloemfontein under pressure.
After a narrow victory against Rwanda, coach Eric Chelle made a few changes to the starting lineup, bringing in captain Troost-Ekong, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, and Cyriel Dessers to replace Frank Onyeka, Bruno Onyemaechi, and the injured Victor Osimhen.
In the 10th minute, Nigeria faced an early challenge when fullback Ola Aina had to leave the field due to injury, paving the way for Bright Osayi-Samuel.
South Africa started strong, putting pressure on goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali and scoring through Troost-Ekong’s own goal.
However, Nigeria responded positively, improving their play in the last 15 minutes of the first half. In the 44th minute, Bassey, who was positioned at left-back, helped set up the equalizer with a precise pass from Dele-Bashiru.
After intense moments of play, the first half finished at 1-1.
At the beginning of the second half, Chelle made two substitutions: Tolu Arokodare came on for Dessers, and Bruno Onyemaechi replaced Troost-Ekong.
The Super Eagles continued to push forward, with Arokodare creating chances, including a near-goal and a blocked shot set up by substitute Christantus Uche.
Despite their attempts, Nigeria couldn’t secure a victory, and the match concluded as a draw.
