NSC barks at AFN officials over age falsification…says “heads must roll”

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria has been called upon by the National Sports Commission to identify the officials involved in the age falsification scandal concerning athletes during the 2025 CAA U18/20 Championships held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
In a communication sent to the AFN, the World Athletics Integrity Unit raised concerns about the ages of two athletes, who presented conflicting birthdates at two separate events. The AFN was given until January 2026 to address this inconsistency.
On Monday, NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko stated that there needs to be significant consequences for the AFN.
"At a time when we are striving for integrity by not allowing age deception in our sports, this issue will not be ignored, I assure you, Nigerians. We are committed to ensuring accuracy in our youth competitions," Dikko declared.
Additionally, NSC Director General Bukola Olapade, who met with AFN Technical Director Gabriel Okon and national coaches, emphasized that officials must be held accountable for the numerous errors in track and field.
"We acknowledge the inquiry from the AIU of World Athletics, and this situation does not reflect well on the AFN. As a Commission, we will take firm action against any official or administrator found responsible for this situation," noted Olapade.
"We want to reiterate to all sports federations, coaches, and administrators that our commitment to addressing age-related issues, as discussed at the recent Council of Sports meeting in Calabar, remains unchanged, regardless of who may be involved."
"Youth competitions are meant for development, and thus the mindset that prioritizes winning over fair play must cease. The NSC requires the support of all stakeholders to eliminate this problem in our sports."
Consequently, the NSC has urged the AFN to promptly address the AIU matter to protect the nation's reputation from additional disgrace.
In other developments, the NSC has removed two athletes from Team Nigeria's camp preparing for the Africa Youth Games, which are set to commence this week in Angola, due to age-related issues.
