Ex-Arsenal striker dies after suffering ‘brain injury’ during game

Chichester City FC and former Arsenal youth player Billy Vigar has passed away due to a “serious brain injury.”
The 21-year-old, who hailed from Worthing, sustained the injury during a match at Wingate and Finchley in the Isthmian League Premier Division on Saturday. It is reported that he may have collided with a concrete structure, but this has not been verified by the club.
Vigar’s family shared on Thursday, “Following a serious brain injury he obtained last Saturday, Billy Vigar was placed in an induced coma.
On Tuesday, he underwent surgery to improve his chances of healing. While this was beneficial, the injury ultimately proved to be insurmountable, and he died on Thursday morning.”
“The reactions to the initial announcement demonstrate how deeply loved and respected Billy was in the realm of football.”
A product of the Arsenal academy, Vigar departed the club in 2024 and also played for Derby County, Hastings United, and Eastbourne Borough.
Arsenal remarked: “Billy entered our academy at the age of 14 on schoolboy terms after being noticed at his local club Hove Rivervale FC and thrived as a forward at Hale End… In addition to his remarkable skills, Billy will be remembered for his passion for the sport, pride in representing our club… and a personality cherished by both teammates and coaches. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Vigar family and his numerous friends in this profoundly challenging time.”
Derby County, Hastings United, Eastbourne Borough, and The FA also voiced their shock and sympathies.
Chichester City confirmed the news of Vigar’s passing and announced that the match against Lewes scheduled for Saturday would be postponed and rescheduled.
