The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission has given the go-ahead for changes to the timeline and schedule of activities related to the 2026 Local Government Elections in the region, lengthening the timeframe for political parties to hold their primaries.
This announcement was made on Thursday through a statement that was endorsed by the Secretary, Pam Davou.
Davou stated that the amendments were prompted by the revocation of the Electoral Act 2022 and the introduction of the Electoral Act 2026.
He indicated that according to the updated schedule, political parties are now allowed to arrange their primaries from Saturday, March 7 until Tuesday, April 7, 2026, which replaces the previous deadline of March 12, 2026.
Additionally, the period for political parties to acquire nomination forms will occur from April 8 until April 10, 2026, and the submission of these forms to the commission is planned from April 13 to April 17, 2026.
In alignment with the newly adjusted timetable, the names of eligible candidates will be released on May 20, 2026, while appeals from dissatisfied aspirants will be accepted on May 21 and will be addressed on May 22, 2026.
The statement further outlined that “the announcement of the personal details of candidates will take place on April 20, 2026, followed by the evaluation of Chairmanship candidates and their running mates between April 22 and April 25, 2026, with the assessment of Councillorship candidates scheduled from April 26 to April 30, 2026.
“The conclusive list of selected candidates is set to be published on June 8, 2026, and the political campaigning is set to begin on June 9, 2026.
“Other essential events in the schedule will remain constant, including the unveiling of the official voter register on July 21, 2026, the deadline for political parties to submit names of polling agents on August 12, 2026, and the announcement of the Notice of Poll on August 17, 2026.
“Campaign activities will conclude at midnight on Monday, September 7, 2026, prior to the elections that are programmed to take place across the seventeen Local Government Areas of Plateau State on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, between 8 am and 3 pm.”
The statement reassured political organizations, stakeholders, and the public of its dedication to facilitating elections that are free, fair, credible, and inclusive while adhering to legal standards and international best practices.
“The Commission calls upon all political entities to adhere strictly to the revised timetable and additional guidelines set forth for the election process,” the statement concluded.
