The Catholic Diocese of Kontagora has denounced the assault on St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools located in Papiri, within the Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State. Armed intruders invaded the school grounds during the early morning of Friday, taking away students and teachers.
In a statement issued on Friday by Rev. Fr. Jatau Joseph, the diocesan secretary, it was reported that the assailants entered the school shortly after midnight, resulting in the shooting of a security guard and the abduction of numerous members of the school community.
The statement indicated, “This is to notify everyone that armed intruders attacked St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Papiri, Niger State, in the early hours of November 21, 2025, abducting several pupils, students, teachers, and a security staff member who suffered serious injuries from a gunshot wound.
“The event took place between 1:00 am and 3:00 am, instilling fear and distress among those associated with the school.”
The diocese strongly condemned the attack, voicing serious concerns regarding the safety of the kidnapped children, educators, and their families.
It confirmed that law enforcement agencies were quickly informed and have initiated coordinated efforts to secure the release of the victims.
According to the statement, the bishop reassured the community that the church is collaborating with security forces, local leaders, and government officials to facilitate a safe rescue operation.
The diocese called on community members to remain composed, contribute to ongoing security measures, and continue to pray for the prompt return of those who have been kidnapped.
It reiterated its dedication to protecting children and committed to providing updates as accurate information becomes available.
“May the Lord grant a swift release to those who have been taken and continue to shield His people from all peril,” the statement concluded.
This incident follows a similar kidnapping in Maga, Kebbi State, where 25 schoolgirls were abducted earlier in the week, raising alarm over the increasing frequency of assaults on educational establishments in northern Nigeria.
In Kwara State, over 50 schools were closed on Thursday due to reports of bandit activity.
President Bola Tinubu canceled scheduled visits to South Africa and Angola in order to oversee the government’s response to the growing security threats.
