2027: I’ll step aside if younger aspirant wins ADC primary – Atiku
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed his willingness to step back for a younger candidate if he does not succeed in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary leading up to the general elections in 2027.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed his willingness to step back for a younger candidate if he does not succeed in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary leading up to the general elections in 2027.
During an interview conducted with BBC Hausa on Wednesday, Atiku, who was the nominee for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the 2023 elections, mentioned that it is premature to determine whether he will enter the race but emphasized that his main focus is currently on bringing the opposition together under the ADC banner.
“This is merely the start. Our main goal is to build the party and attract a substantial support base.
“If I decide to run for office and a younger candidate prevails, I will accept the outcome.
“The party we have aligned with now values the involvement of the youth and women.”
He dismissed rumors of any potential “double-dealing” between the ADC and the PDP, asserting firmly, “No, that’s not my reputation. When I commit to a direction, I follow through.”
It is important to note that in July, the 78-year-old resigned from the PDP, citing fundamental disagreements and a departure from the party’s original principles.
In a letter dated July 14, 2025, directed to the Chairman of PDP Jada 1 Ward in Adamawa State, Atiku officially ended his affiliation with the party effective immediately.
“I feel compelled to separate from the party due to its current direction, which I believe strays from the core ideals we once upheld,” he stated.
“With great sorrow, I resign, acknowledging the irreconcilable differences that have arisen,” the correspondence partially states.
