AFCON 2025: Nwabali set to miss trip to Morocco…. down with ankle, hand injury

Super Eagles' primary goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, is striving to recover in time for the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), as he is dealing with ongoing injuries to his ankle and hand.
Chippa United's coach, Vusimuzi Vilakazi, shared in a discussion with SuperSport that Nwabali has been competing while experiencing discomfort, and his condition worsened following the Super Eagles playoff match for the World Cup last month in Morocco.
“I have my doubts regarding his injury condition,” Vilakazi commented.
“I’m not optimistic he will be ready for the AFCON, but during our conversation, he expressed his belief that he would heal quickly; however, it’s understandable as a player he desires to participate in the Cup of Nations finals.
“Nonetheless, the current situation indicates he is still injured. I also wish for a favorable outcome that he may indeed be present.
“He has an ankle problem, but additionally, his hand requires surgery because he’s been competing with that (injured) hand for some time, and the injury worsened while he was in Morocco.”
Nwabali was part of the 54-player preliminary roster announced by Eric Chelle, the Eagles' head coach, for the AFCON.
Maduka Okoye and Amas Obasogie are prepared to step in for the starting position if Nwabali is unable to join the team.
The 2025 AFCON is set to take place in Morocco from December 21 to January 18. The Eagles find themselves in Group C for the tournament, competing against Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda.
