The Justice Minister stated that corruption directly attacks human dignity.
While addressing an event in Abuja, held by the Inter-Agency Task Team for Anti-Corruption Agencies in honor of African Anti-Corruption Day 2025, Fagbemi referred to corruption as a serious infringement on human rights.

The Federal Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has declared that corruption is not only a failure in governance or the legal system but also a direct attack on human dignity.
While addressing an event in Abuja, held by the Inter-Agency Task Team for Anti-Corruption Agencies in honor of African Anti-Corruption Day 2025, Fagbemi referred to corruption as a serious infringement on human rights.
He stated, “When funds allocated for hospitals are misused, it's not merely a failure in policy but a violation of the right to health and life.”
Speaking on behalf of the Minister, Solicitor-General Mrs. Beatrice Jedy-Agba highlighted that mismanagement of education funding denies future generations the chance to thrive. Additionally, he pointed out that corruption within the justice system erodes the principle of equality under the law.
"This clarifies why battling corruption is not just a political necessity but also a moral duty,” he explained.
Fagbemi urged for greater protection for whistleblowers and journalists, emphasizing their essential contribution to uncovering corruption and ensuring accountability.
He remarked that combating corruption “is about upholding the core values of our society and our humanity, irrespective of our economic background. Our determination to fight corruption must align with a strong commitment to the rule of law, due process, and civil liberties. As we strive to create strong institutions, we must also foster a culture of dignity that ensures every Nigerian is treated justly, and where public service is viewed as a moral responsibility.”
Fagbemi emphasized the need for safeguarding whistleblowers and investigative journalists who are crucial in maintaining truth and integrity.
"Though our resolve against corruption is steadfast, we must also adhere to our obligations regarding human rights, the rule of law, and due process, which regulate our actions in the public sphere. Additionally, it's crucial that law enforcement respects civil liberties. Investigations should be conducted fairly, and prosecutions must be impartial and objective, strictly adhering to lawful procedures as outlined by the Constitution and relevant laws."
Earlier, Mrs. Jane Onwumerre, the Head of the Technical Unit on Governance and Anti-corruption Reforms (TUGAR), noted that the theme for 2025, “Promoting Human Dignity in the Fight Against Corruption,” carries significant importance and relevance.
She pointed out, “Corruption extends beyond financial or legal issues; it infringes upon the basic rights of our citizens. When funds meant for socioeconomic progress are misappropriated, it erodes trust in institutions, slows economic development, and disproportionately affects the most vulnerable.”
“Corruption is a multifaceted problem with extensive consequences. It strips away our Human dignity, a fundamental Human Right that asserts that every individual has inherent value and deserves to be acknowledged and respected.”
