Coalition: "I’ll stay in the PDP even if everyone else leaves" – Makinde
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), declaring that he will remain in the party regardless of any coalition formed to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has expressed his unwavering allegiance to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stating his intention to stay with the party despite any coalition initiatives aimed at opposing the current All Progressives Congress (APC) government in the upcoming 2027 elections.
This announcement was made during a meeting of the Southwest PDP caucus, which took place at the party’s Olusoji Adagunodo Southwest zonal Secretariat in Ibadan on Friday.
The focus of the gathering was on important matters affecting the party in the region, particularly the pressing need for the federal government to release local government funds that are currently being withheld from Osun State.
The governor stressed the party's commitment to perseverance and unity despite political difficulties.
Reaffirming the caucus's loyalty, he declared, “We restate our strong allegiance to the PDP and our dedication to the unity, stability, progress, and success of the Party at every level in the Zone and throughout the nation.”
He pointed out that withholding these funds is not only unconstitutional but also harmful to the residents of Osun State.
A statement released after the meeting highlighted, “The federal government’s action in withholding the local government allocations for Osun State is unconstitutional and violates the rights and welfare of its people.”
He stated, "We want everyone to understand that the PDP in the Southwest stands united; we are in this together. Coalitions pose no threat to the PDP. Who are these coalition members? Many have switched parties, whether from the PDP or APC. What does their history show?"
“Does changing parties mean they have changed their ways or now offer something valuable to the people? These are important questions to consider.”
“This building represents the PDP’s Southwest headquarters. If it is damaged, as leaders of the PDP in the Southwest, should we just leave and seek shelter elsewhere?” he continued. “We must remain here, repair it, and show the public that we are accountable leaders who care for their interests,” Makinde asserted.
In comments made during the meeting, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, represented by his deputy, Kola Adewusi, reiterated his commitment to the PDP and affirmed his leadership role within the party in Osun State.
He dismissed rumors suggesting that Adeleke was engaging in any political alliances in anticipation of the 2027 general elections, reinforcing that the governor is an integral part of the PDP.
Following the meeting, a statement read by the public relations secretary for the Southwest PDP, Chief Sanya Atofarati, recognized the significant contributions of key leaders in the region, especially applauding the efforts of Governor Makinde and Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke.
We applaud the hard work of the Executive Governor of Oyo State, His Excellency Engr. Seyi Makinde, alongside the Executive Governor of Osun State, His Excellency Senator Ademola Adeleke, for their relentless efforts in supporting the stability and growth of the PDP as the leading political party in the Southwestern region.
The statement reassured members that the PDP is strong in the Southwest and encouraged all party branches to stay committed, stating, “We urge all members and relevant groups within the party to remain dedicated and work diligently towards the smooth execution of the upcoming National Convention.”
In a message promoting unity, the party clarified its position regarding a rumored coalition, reminding members to stay united.
“We are not involved in the reported coalition and encourage all PDP members to stand together,” it confirmed.
The party expressed its readiness to collaborate with others who share similar goals, saying, “Our Party is open to partnering with other well-intentioned individuals who aim to help rescue our nation from the grip of the All Progressives Congress (APC).”
With an eye to the future, the party committed to increasing efforts to ensure success for the PDP in the upcoming bye-elections in Oyo and Ogun States as well as local government elections in Lagos State.
“We are confident that the PDP will be the preferred choice in the Southwest and across Nigeria, achieving significant victories in the forthcoming elections,” it announced.
The PDP also voiced strong concerns about the rising insecurity and economic difficulties under the APC government. It reaffirmed Governor Makinde's statement, noting, “The 2027 election will be a contest between Nigerians and the APC, with Nigerians winning under the PDP's leadership.”
The party called for solidarity among Nigerians, urging everyone to support the PDP.
“We encourage Nigerians to remain hopeful, steadfast, and to join us as the PDP leads the way to reclaim our nation from APC’s poor leadership,” the statement concluded.
