ABUJA — On Wednesday, Abubakar Malami, SAN, the former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, along with his son Abdulaziz, obtained a bail amounting to N1 billion from the Federal High Court in Abuja.
In a ruling issued by Justice Emeka Nwite, the court also granted bail worth N500 million to Malami’s spouse, Hajia Bashir Asabe, who is also a co-defendant in the case.
The court mandated that each defendant must enlist two sureties, each equally accountable for the same bail amount, who must possess real estate in the areas of Asokoro, Maitama, or Gwarinpa within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The court stated that, in addition to providing title documents for property verification, the defendants are required to hand over their travel passports.
Furthermore, the ruling indicated that the sureties need to provide two recent passport-sized photographs and must also complete an affidavit demonstrating their financial capabilities.
The court cautioned that the defendants are prohibited from leaving the country without authority.
It also ordered that they remain in detention until the bail terms are fulfilled.
The proceedings were postponed until February 17 for the trial to commence.
Malami, who held the position of Justice Minister from November 11, 2015, to May 29, 2023, during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, is facing a 16-count charge related to money laundering.
He was brought before the court alongside his son, Abdulaziz, and his spouse Asabe, identified as an employee of Rahamaniyya Properties Limited, which is alleged to have been involved in hiding the proceeds of illicit activities through real estate transactions.

Nigeria vs Mozambique: Super Eagles against the ghost of history
Little by little, a distinction is being made between boys and men. Sudan, along with the surprising exit of Tunisia, has been eliminated. Many Nigerians perceive this matchup as advantageous; a settled outcome already, but the Mambas, who advanced to the Round of 16 by being one of the top four third-placed teams, represent a significant obstacle for the ambitions of the Super Eagles.
