Australian FA Urges Reversal Of 2026 FIFA World Cup Watch Party Ban
The Australian Football Association has urged officials in Melbourne to reverse a ruling that prevents public viewing events for the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Federation Square.

The Australian Football Association has urged officials in Melbourne to reverse a ruling that prevents public viewing events for the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Federation Square.
The organization expressed its profound disappointment after the Melbourne Arts Precinct declined to permit live broadcasts, referencing previous incidents of unsafe behavior among fans.
Martin Kugeler, the chief executive of Football Australia, contended that this decision contradicts the city’s sports history and diverse cultural makeup.
“The FIFA World Cup is the premier sporting event globally and brings together Australia’s diverse communities while strengthening our national sense of self,” Kugeler stated.
“Live viewing locations create memorable experiences for sports enthusiasts in Australia. Melbourne stands as a key hub for sports and multiculturalism in Australia, and this choice undermines that legacy.”
Katrina Sedgwick, the chief executive of Melbourne Arts Precinct, justified the decision, explaining to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that concerns for safety influenced the outcome.
“This situation primarily involves a very small number of fans whose behavior is unfortunately considered antisocial and, frankly, hazardous,” she remarked.
Sedgwick cited earlier screenings where flares were brought into packed events, resulting in injuries to some attendees.
“On the final night of the last match we showed for the Socceroos, we recorded over 100 flares and fireworks that were set off in the square,” she noted.
The heated debate arises as the Australian national soccer team gears up for their campaign in 2026, starting with a match against Turkey in Vancouver on June 13, followed by games against the United States in Seattle and Paraguay in California.
Former Socceroo Craig Foster also condemned the prohibition, stating on social media that “everyone involved should collaborate to reverse this ridiculous decision.”
