Army Colonel Michael Randrianirina took the oath of office as the president of Madagascar on Friday, only a few days following a military takeover that forced former president Andry Rajoelina to flee.
Randrianirina, who was in charge of the CAPSAT military unit that revolted and joined forces with anti-government demonstrators over the weekend, recited the presidential oath during a ceremony at the nation's supreme court in the capital city of Antananarivo, as observed by AFP reporters.
“This day signifies a significant change for our nation. Fueled by the aspiration for transformation and a profound passion for our country, the people are united as we eagerly begin a new era in our national history,” Randrianirina expressed.
The event, led by the president of the constitutional court, saw the attendance of military personnel, legislators, representatives from the youth-led Gen Z protest movement, and various foreign envoys, including those from the United States, the European Union, Russia, and France.
“We will collaborate with all the key stakeholders in the country to create an excellent constitution… and to finalize new electoral regulations for the organization of elections and referendums,” he stated, expressing gratitude to the youth for their vital role in the protests that resulted in Rajoelina's removal.
“We are focused on moving away from the previous regime,” Randrianirina declared. “Our primary objective is to fundamentally transform the nation's governance across administrative, social, economic, and political dimensions.”
