Sukubo relies on Northern backing in his bid for reelection.
The President of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Amb. Sukubo Sara-Igbe Sukubo, has asserted that the backing and goodwill from Northern Nigeria are vital for his leadership achievements, as he sought a new term to lead the youth organization.

The President of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Amb. Sukubo Sara-Igbe Sukubo, has asserted that the backing and goodwill from Northern Nigeria are vital for his leadership achievements, as he sought a new term to lead the youth organization.
Sukubo made this request during the North-West Consultative Meeting held on Thursday evening in Kano State, which was facilitated by the NYCN Kano State Chapter in collaboration with the state administration.
Attending the meeting were officials from the government, members of the NYCN Board of Trustees, Advisory Council, Management Committee, the seven state leaders from the region, zonal heads, and representatives of Voluntary Youth Organizations (VYOs).
“Today, I am asking for your assistance, today I am requesting your renewed mandate to remain your servant leader, to continue serving in this capacity,” he conveyed to the attendees present.
The youth official conveyed that the North had always been his ‘foundation’ of support since he became part of the council, providing him with the strength and drive to ascend to various positions of authority within the NYCN.
“I have come here today to appeal specifically to the North-West and by extension to the entire Northern region. I wish to express how significant you are to me, how the North has supported my administration since it began. I do not take your goodwill and support lightly,” he further remarked.
Sukubo highlighted that his leadership’s choice to initiate the revalidation of affiliated VYOs, a step previous leaders shied away from due to concerns about conflicts, was intentional and greatly advantageous for youth groups in the North.
He clarified that this action was undertaken in accordance with constitutional mandates and aimed at enhancing the legitimacy of the NYCN.
“I resolved to take decisive action by launching the revalidation process myself. Numerous Presidents of the National Youth Council have come and gone; those who attempted revalidation encountered crises that ultimately led to their removal from the position,” he stated.
He explained that this effort has resulted in 18 revalidated VYOs in the North-East, 35 in the North-West, and 31 in the North-Central. Meanwhile, the Kano State Government praised Sukubo’s commitment to empowering youth. The Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mustapha Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, while receiving the NYCN President in his office, indicated that the state acknowledged the favorable effects of his leadership.
Given the considerable youth demographic in Kano, the commissioner mentioned that the state administration was dedicated to forming strategic collaborations with the NYCN and other entities to enhance the lives of young individuals.
Following the consultative meeting, stakeholders from the North-West collectively expressed their confidence in Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the NYCN national executives under Sukubo’s guidance.
They also committed to ensuring that all delegates’ votes from their zone would be cast in his favor at the upcoming national elective congress scheduled for September 19–22, 2025.
