The government of Niger State has verified the kidnapping of an unknown number of students and staff from St. Mary’s School located in the Papiri region of Agwara Local Government, labeling the event as highly concerning and preventable.
In a declaration made by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alh. Abubakar Usman, the administration stated that it is still waiting for an accurate count of those who were taken, as security forces are engaged in their evaluations.
The SSG disclosed that this assault transpired despite prior intelligence indicating a heightened danger level in certain areas of the Niger North Senatorial District. He mentioned that the government responded by implementing a security order to halt all construction work and mandating the temporary closure of all boarding schools in that area.
“Unfortunately, St. Mary’s School chose to restart and continue its educational programs without informing or obtaining permission from the State Government, thus placing both students and staff in unnecessary peril,” the statement read.
Usman further mentioned that law enforcement agencies have initiated a comprehensive investigation and search-and-rescue missions aimed at facilitating the safe return of the kidnapped students. The government reassured the public that it is maintaining close contact with security entities and will relay updates as the situation progresses.
Authorities have urged school owners, community leaders, and other stakeholders to carefully follow security recommendations, emphasizing that safeguarding lives—particularly those of children—is the administration's foremost concern. Residents have been advised to stay calm and assist law enforcement with any valuable information.
Local reports suggest that the raid took place between 2:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. on Friday. Community sources noted that numerous students were abducted during the assault on the Catholic-operated institution, though the precise number is still uncertain as documentation is underway.
Ahmed Abdullahi Rofia, the Head of Department for Disaster and Relief in Agwara Local Government, confirmed the situation via phone, stating that the count of kidnapped students and staff is still under verification. When reached for comment, the spokesperson for the Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, indicated that more information would be shared later.
This alarming incident follows closely on the heels of the kidnapping of 25 students in Maga, Kebbi State, raising further alarms about deteriorating security conditions at schools throughout the northern region.
In Kwara State, a recent assault on a CAC church in Eruku resulted in the deaths of three worshippers and the abduction of over 20 individuals, leading the state government to close down more than 50 schools on Thursday.
The continual attacks on educational establishments have increased anxiety among parents and reignited demands for enhanced community-focused security measures in vulnerable areas.
