Human rights supporter and attorney Dele Farotimi has expressed his support for Peter Obi's proposal of a single-term presidency. He pointed out that previous leaders in Nigeria have wasted their extended time in office without making significant advancements.
During his Monday guest spot on Channels Televisionâs Sunrise Daily, Farotimi remarked, âWhat did Obasanjo achieve in eight years? And what about Buhari? He had the same amount of time and he led Nigeria into ruin. Now, in just two years, Tinubu is pushing us back by decades."
âItâs not just about the length of time in office; it truly depends on how effectively that time is used.â
He also highlighted that making a lasting difference does not necessitate holding office for an extended period.
Farotimi, who is recognized for his strong advocacy for justice and reform, insisted that impactful change doesnât require a long duration in the position.
âI first became aware of the one-term presidency concept from Peter Obi during the 2023 elections. We need to explore deeper issues rather than just accepting claims. When someone says they will serve only one term, itâs worth asking, âOne term for what purpose?â If I have a vision that fits within my lifetime, then maybe it isnât truly a vision; it becomes mere ambition. Genuine visions require generations to fulfill.â
âSo, if someone claims they will serve just one term, my focus shifts to âWhat are your plans? How will you utilize that one term?ââ
âIf I were to pursue the Nigerian presidency, I wouldnât need more than two years to accomplish what I must. Lasting change doesnât require extensive time; the real question should be, âWhat does he plan to achieve during that one term?ââ stated the attorney.
It's important to remember that Obi has consistently promised to serve just a single four-year term if he becomes president in 2027âa pledge that has drawn varied responses, with some doubting his authenticity.
Recently, the former governor of Anambra proposed that Nigeria implement a single five-year presidential term, similar to South Korea's system where re-election is not allowed.
