2027: Coalition demands Atiku, Obi’s full transition into ADC
The opposition alliance has instructed its members, which includes former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, the Labour Party's candidate for the 2023 presidential election, to leave their existing political parties and fully commit to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the platform chosen to contest against President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

This instruction was unveiled in Abuja on Thursday by Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, after a meeting attended by top party officials and influential political leaders.
He mentioned that all matters relating to the African Democratic Association (ADA) have been resolved. “The coalition has concluded all discussions regarding the ADA, indicating they have no interest in the registration or any aspects concerning the association,” he remarked.
“While all members have been given a definitive order to resign from their current political parties, the caucus did not mention a specific timeline for this action,” Abdullahi mentioned.
Since the coalition's announcement of the ADC on July 2, several opposition leaders have switched allegiance, although many, including Atiku and Obi, have yet to officially sever connections with their previous parties.
Atiku has abandoned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but has not yet formally become an ADC member, while Obi still retains a connection with the Labour Party even as he aligns with the coalition.
Abdullahi also indicated that the coalition’s National Working Committee will soon announce the timetable for primary elections in Osun and Ekiti states in preparation for the upcoming off-cycle governorship elections.
“All the prospective presidential candidates are in agreement to back the winner of the primary elections,” he stated.
Attendees of the meeting comprised National Chairman David Mark, Atiku Abubakar, National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, ex-Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal, and former Rivers Governor Chibuike Amaechi.
On another note, the ruling APC and the opposition PDP have rejected the coalition’s initiatives, asserting that they do not pose a threat to their established authority.
