Nollywood performer Williams Uchemba has called on the Federal Government to implement public executions as a way to deter kidnapping and other significant offenses within the nation.
In a video posted on his Instagram account, Uchemba emphasized the necessity for Nigeria to strictly uphold its constitution and enforce harsher penalties to reduce criminal behavior.
Using a parenting analogy, the actor compared a lenient approach towards wrongdoers to raising a child without instilling any repercussions.
“When a child starts to take meat from the pot and when the mother catches the child, she only gives a minimal punishment or fails to show the child the consequences of their actions, the mother is essentially nurturing a future criminal, who may end up ruining her life or becoming a disgrace to the family,” he expressed.
Uchemba argued that public executions could significantly lower crime rates and suggested the creation of a dedicated television channel to air such executions, similar to Big Brother Naija.
He pointed out that Nigerian law already prescribes a death penalty for kidnapping, but expressed concern over the lack of transparency in how these sentences are carried out.
“We possess a constitution that governs our nation, and I fail to understand why we are not more vocal when it comes time to implement that constitution.
“Kidnapping is punishable by death. Some kidnappers get apprehended, yet we never find out whether they are imprisoned or executed. In my opinion, we should have a specific channel, much like BBNaija, that would be focused on apprehending individuals who commit these crimes and publicly executing them. Until we start delivering consequences for certain actions, we will not see any change.”
The actor also urged Nigerians to advocate for more stringent law enforcement and tougher penalties, referencing China as a nation that uses capital punishment effectively to diminish crime.
“We aspire to resemble China, yet we lack the resolve that China demonstrates. The penalties for kidnapping and corruption in China are death,” he concluded.
