Nigerian performer Kunle Remi has raised concerns about the way awards are presented at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), indicating that it falls short of the quality observed at global award shows.
This statement was made by the actor on Monday in response to a clip from the 2026 Oscars, which featured Hollywood actor Michael B. Jordan being awarded his trophy for Best Actor.
In the footage posted on his Instagram story, Jordan's trophy had his name inscribed on it right after he won.
In his commentary on the scene, Remi drew a comparison to what he implied occurs at the AMVCA, stating: “So they put your name on it right after you win! Just like that. Take it home! If it were AMVCA, everyone would share one that evening and then return to claim it at the following ceremony.”
His comments ignited a conversation online, even though typically, those who win at the AMVCA receive their plaques during the event unless they are absent when it's time for distribution.
Some observers speculated that the actor might have been alluding to a different awards ceremony. At the 2025 Headies Awards, singer Shallipopi faced an uncomfortable situation when he was awarded Best Rap Single but reportedly only received a handshake on stage rather than a plaque.
This is not the first occasion Remi has openly criticized the AMVCA.
In 2023, he conveyed his dissatisfaction at not being nominated despite his role as Saro in the film Anikulapo. Nevertheless, the film achieved 16 nominations at the event.
