Cooking gas price drops 17.4% to N11,875 – Investigation

In August 2025, the cost to refill a 12.5kg cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly called cooking gas, saw a significant decrease of 17.4 percent compared to the previous month, dropping from N14,375 in July to N11,875.
When looking at it from a yearly perspective, the average price fell by 16.7 percent from N14,261.57 recorded during the same time in 2024.
Vanguard's research found that the price for gas sold by the kilogram currently ranges between N950, N1,000, and N1,020, depending on the area.
Additionally, a recent report from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) revealed that, in July 2025, the average cost for refilling a 12.5kg gas cylinder had a slight monthly drop of 1.91 percent, going from N21,010.56 in June to N20,609.48.
The report highlighted that Adamawa state had the highest average cost for a 12.5kg cylinder at N22,528.39, closely followed by Rivers state at N22,512.49 and Taraba state at N22,363.57.
On the other hand, the lowest average price was found in Yobe state at N19,030.00, with Niger and Nasarawa states following at N19,154.99 and N20,000.62, respectively.
