According to News, Malam Mohammed Haruna, the INEC National Commissioner responsible for Voter Education and Publicity, shared this information on Thursday in Abuja during a collaborative interactive event hosted by the Peering Advocacy and Advancement Centre in Africa (PAACA) alongside Legis360.
He mentioned that while the electoral commission is still pending the availability of financial resources, it is actively working on preparations to ensure the 2027 elections proceed successfully.
The national commissioner clarified that this situation remains within the stipulated timeline set by the Electoral Act, 2026, which states that funds allocated to the commission for any general election must be provided “no later than six months before the upcoming general election.”
Nevertheless, he indicated that the commission is already in the process of arranging the procurement of new electoral supplies, which include the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and other equipment that were damaged, lost, or not recovered from past elections.
“Our ICT director has just come back from China regarding purchases because not all BVAS devices from the previous general elections have been accounted for. Orders must be placed, and this process requires time,” he stated.
Haruna also shared that the commission intends to carry out simulation presidential elections to trial its technological implementations.
This plan, as he noted, is intended to prevent a recurrence of the technical issues that impacted the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal during the 2023 presidential election.
INEC has suggested a comprehensive budget of ₦873.78 billion for the 2027 general elections, with a significant portion allocated for election operations, technology, and capital expenditures.
