‘Misinformation, Disinformation’ – INEC Warns Against Fake 2027 Election Campaign Timetable
The Independent National Electoral Commission, commonly known as INEC, has rejected claims suggesting that it has altered the campaign schedule for the upcoming 2027 general elections, labeling a graphic that has been widely shared on social media as untrue.

The commission stated that the graphic, which allegedly provided dates for the campaigns related to the presidential, National Assembly, governorship, and state Houses of Assembly elections, did not originate from INEC.
This graphic asserted that the campaigning for the presidential and National Assembly elections would conclude on January 15, 2027, rather than January 14, which is the date specified in INEC’s official schedule. It also indicated that the campaigning for governorship and state assembly races would finish on February 5, 2027.
In a conversation with The Cable on Tuesday, Adedayo Oketola, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, remarked that the commission had not provided a different timetable for campaigns.
He clarified that all campaign timelines are included in the revised schedule and activities plan for the 2027 general elections that was released earlier this year.
“This graphic is not from INEC. The Commission does not provide campaign timetables separately. All authorized campaign schedules are already detailed in the revised timetable and activities plan for the 2027 general election, which was published on February 26, 2026,” Oketola stated.
Oketola encouraged both Nigerians and media organizations to confirm any electoral information through the official channels provided by the commission.
“We recommend that the media and the public consistently check electoral details via our official channels. As we approach the election season, it is essential that we all stay alert to prevent the spread of false or misleading information,” he noted.
INEC released its updated timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections in February, setting January 16, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly elections.
According to the schedule, political parties are to initiate their campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections starting on August 19, 2026, while campaigning for governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections will kick off on September 9, 2026.
The timetable also states that the campaigning for the presidential and National Assembly elections is to wrap up on January 14, 2027, whereas the campaigns for the governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections will finish on February 4, 2027, precisely 24 hours prior to voting.
The elections for the governorship and state Houses of Assembly are slated to take place on February 6, 2027.
